Doug,

I really like this tool. It is saving me a lot of time. Thanks.
Have you thought about adding the ability to sort by certain columns or searching through the list of hosts for a specific host? That would be cool.

When I try to do updates from Windows 7, the WSUS result changes to "Installing Updates...", but it doesn't seem like it is actaully doing anything.
When I look on the PC being updated, the log file in RRx is not updated, and the .exe is in the directory, but is not running on the system in question.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have this bouncing against up to 150 servers at times, works like a champ on my 2003 dev server, but I just threw it on my 2008 prod server working with the same server list and it says it can't find the PsExec.exe on the remote server when I try to run updates. Know of any compatibility issues? We're working your little tool into our security procedures so ideally it should be running from our prod box.

Hi,

the "Reboot if required" option doesn't work on German Server 2003 (i haven't tested more). I think the solution is in the rrx.log (the last 2 Lines):

Overall Installation Result: Succeeded with errors
Reboot Required: Wahr

I think "wahr" is not the right answer for your program.

it would be a nice feature, if i can plan the "search, download, install and reboot" by date and time. We must reboot 50% of our Servers in the night or at the weekend... and till now we do this all by hand (install) and script (reboot).

Could this be added to the end of the script? It would be nice if we could use psexec to issue this command after updates are installed. It would then reflect the current state of the server in WSUS.

As long as I don't use integrated security everything works fine. As soon as I check integrated security I get an access denied message.

I use my domain admin credentials. The guys from security here don't like the message that credentials will be send in clear text over the network. So I have access to the servers but only in plain text mode.

Hey Doug

Remote-Reboot-X is *exactly* the kind of tool I was looking for and gave up on writing myself long ago. :-) I am having a bit of trouble learning how to use the WSUS actions, so I was hoping you could provide some help.

The error that keeps occurring is "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password". Now, I *know* that my user name and password are good, because I can log directly into the (remote computer) console using them. I am also able to log into the remote computer and execute a command prompt using PsExec. Within RRX, the Ping, Get Last Boot Time, and Reboot (normal) actions all work too. But "WSUS - install ..." and "WSUS - search..." action suite keep returning "Logon Failure". Turning off Windows Firewall does not seem to help either.

FYI, the remote computer is not part of a domain, so I have set RRX credentials to use the local domain by specifying dot (.) in the Domain field. I can provide other info and try other settings at your request. Thanks for your time and assistance!

exit

Great util!

if you'd check for the existence of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sysinternals\PsExec\EulaAccepted, the possibility of "lost" processes due to eula-windows would disappear.

Another neat function would be to offer to fetch the remote WindowsUpdate.log from the right click menu.
a debug log from RemoteRebootX.exe would also be nice, so you could see just what does or doesn't work..

Hey man,
good stuff... i have the same in vbscript, but never converted it to a "proper" app...

Just wondering about troubleshooting... when i run the tool for a specific server, i get "installing updates" in the status window indefinately...

on the remote server,C:\rrx\WSUS.Search.Download.Install.Updates.exe exists, but no logs. If i double click the exe on the server directly, logs will appear and updates etc will install. Psexec is located in the same dir as rrx.

Suggestions ?

PS - the one additional thing i always wanted to add into mine was the ability to retrieve a server list out of AD... either via container, OS version property or a combo of both.... something that may be worth looking at for v 1.6 ?

What are the firewall settings on Windows Server 2008/Win 7 target machines that will allow the program to work. Turning off the firewall works, but if anyone has the firewall rules figured out it would be very helpful.

this is a perfect script, but it would be better to include check for update and download them and install them, cause i use auoption=1 since i use deep freeze, and i don’t want to download updates everytime a PC restarts. Anyway very very very good job. Best regards. -erjon

Hi there… do you have the app in GMT or something coz I see times 4 hours behind my actual time which is mis-leading. A server rebooted at 4:26 PM, it reports it as 12:26 PM.

Hey this is a great tool… we have a large environment and we use VB extensively… but I’m a big fan of GUI… :-)..
One thing though, I keep getting log not found when i try to view WSUS log… at what point will that log be created?

Once again great tool.
